A. To help you figure out which comfort level will give you the best night's rest, we have developed an easy 1-10
Easy Sleep Scale. Take a look now and find out which type of mattress is perfect for you!
A. When choosing a mattress, it is especially important to identify your personal comfort preference. After all, however many features a mattress may have, you won't get a restful night's sleep if you're uncomfortable! The most common comfort levels are firm, plush, and pillowtop. These all refer to the surface feel of the mattress, not the support. The support comes from teh coils or the core of the mattress. Take a moment to make your selection according to the descriptions below:
- Firm - If you prefer a mattress without much give, a firm mattress is probably your best option. Firm mattresses have a layer of cushioning but are not as soft as other models. A firm feel is recommended for people who sleep on their stomachs most of the time. A stomach sleeper shouldn't be on a soft surface, or the back will tend to bow downwards, causing lower back pain. A firm sleep surface keeps the back straight and provides a very comfortable night's sleep for a stomach sleeper.
- Plush - People who sleep on their sides or sides and back prefer a plush feel. This means that there is some quilted padding under the surface of the mattress. The padding provides cushion and pressure relief for the shoulder, arm, and hip when on one's side, and fills in the small of the back when lying on the back.
- Pillow Top - If you have ever added a mattress pad to your mattress to make it softer, a pillow top model may be exactly what you're looking for. Those who sleep on their side and back but enjoy a much softer or more padded feel prefer a pillowtop, which provides a few more inches of padding sewn to the top of the mattress.
- Euro Top - A euro top model incorporates an extra layer of cushioning at the top of the mattress. Unlike a pillow top mattress, the cushioning on a euro top mattress is actually sewn into the mattress. Sleepers with painful joints may enjoy the gentle cushioning of a euro top mattress.
A. What do you do when the perfect mattress doesn't provide the same support that it once did? You try to find the same one, or the closest thing to it. Mattress lines are always evolving and tend to change every year or two. This means it might be hard to find the exact same mattress. However, by determining your preferred
comfort level, you can find one that feels just like it.
A. When it comes to a medical condition, we always recommend consulting a physician before purchasing a mattress. Everyone's body works differently, so it is best to get advice from those who are most knowledgeable about your body. Our wide range of comfort scales can generally accommodate your specific needs.
A. Certain mattresses are specifically made for and only sold to hotel industry. This is because - in general - hotel mattresses have to be flipped often because of staining, and are supported by a boxspring with coils (sort of like a second mattress). A quick call to the hotel will establish the company that manufactures the mattresses used by the hotel, and from there you can generally find almost the exact equivalent mattress, adjusted for home use. Serta is the most popular mattress brand among major hotels and motels around the world. Some of the most prestigious hotels have chosen Serta above all other mattresses for it's comfort, durability, and value. Close your eyes - it will feel like you're on vacation!
A. A box spring acts as a shock absorber for your mattress. It adds to the comfort of the mattress, and also to the "comfort life" of the mattress. That means that with the proper box spring, your mattress will feel just as good years down the road as it does on the first day.
A. It is not recommended that you put a new mattress on an old box spring. Although an old box spring looks fine on the outside, it wears down on the inside, and can actually damage a new mattress. Putting a new mattress on an old box spring may also void your mattress warranty.
A. Sometimes it is fine to order just a mattress, assuming that your box springs are still in great condition. Chances are, however, if your mattress needs to be replaced, so do your box springs. You wouldn't build a brand new house on a crumbling foundation, would you? A new mattress will eventually sink into the worn areas of the box spring, removing the comfort from your night's sleep.
A. No. Platform beds are designed to use a mattress alone. You will not need a box spring. Keep in mind though, that a platform bed will give the mattress a slightly firmer feel than if it were on a box spring, so purchase a mattress that is a degree softer than you might otherwise select.
A. Sometimes Queen and King box springs can provide a significant challenge when trying to ascend a narrow staircase. Fortunately, there is no need to bang up your wall trying to squeeze it through. Some of our brand names offer a "split box spring," which involves two smaller box springs instead of one large one. It is a good idea to call us if you are interested in this type of box spring.
A. Mattresses are now all one-sided, never to be flipped. You should rotate your new mattress head-to-toe every few months, or per the manufacturer's instructions, but never flip. There is a sleep surface on only one side of your mattress.
A. Many people feel the same way. Mattresses are much thicker now than ever before. There are several options in which you can select mattresses that are not as thick as others. But all the manufacturers also offer the option of a lower box spring ("low profile"). That will bring the overall height down by 4 to 5 inches.
A. Not necessarily. All of the manufacturers construct their mattresses differently. Some use thinner steel which allows for more coils, while others use very thick steel, which allows for fewer coils. Either way, you will still receive excellent support. When you compare coil counts between different brands, you are not comparing apples to apples due to the differences in construction.
A. All of our mattresses go straight from the factory directly to you. We do not sell any used or reconditioned mattresses or box springs. You can rest assured that you are getting a quality mattress that is committed to your comfort.
A. All of the products listed on our site are in brand-new condition and backed by a full manufacturer's warranty.
A. A huge benefit of buying online is that we do not charge sales tax on delivery anywhere in the United States, except for Massachusetts where our main office is located.
A. The best way to clean your mattress is to cover it so it doesn't get dirty in the first place! Putting a
mattress pad under your sheets is definitely a good idea. If your mattress does get a little dirty, we recommend using a vacuum to get the dirt out. For stains, apply a conservative amount of mild soap and cold water. Just don't soak the mattress or box spring, as mildew can become an unwelcome guest.
