We use a Mattress Feel Scale from 1 to 10 with 1 being the firmest and 10 being the softest. Please note - the number scale used simply indicates relative softness or firmness of a mattress, and does not indicate more or less body support from the mattress surface. Mattresses at all feel levels are designed to provide sufficient support for one's body.

Mattress Feel Scale Rating of 1
Mattresses with a rating of 1, while designed to provide adequate body support, could be likened to sleeping on a very hard surface, similar to a floor. This would only be recommended for someone who must sleep on a very hard surface. This rating is used primarily as a reference point as most mattresses available are not this firm.

Mattress Feel Scale Rating of 2 to 3
A rating of 2-3 would be recommended for someone who sleeps comfortably on a carpeted floor. These mattresses will feel firm, but will have a slight amount of padding under the surface.

Mattress Feel Scale Rating of 4 to 6
This Mattress Feel Rating is the most popular/common - these mattresses will not be too firm, but will also not be so soft that you sink into them, making them ideal for those who don't have a strong preference either way. This rating is also ideal for couples who may have slightly different preferences as a "compromise".

Mattress Feel Scale Rating of 7 to 9
Mattresses with this rating will be plush to quite soft, often described as "pillow top" or "super plush", etc. Those who prefer the sensation of down or foam mattress pads, mattress toppers, or cushy-soft waterbeds will enjoy mattresses in this range. Many fill/material varieties exist to provide different types of support at this level of softness - call our mattress experts with questions.

Mattress Feel Scale Rating of 10
A mattress with a rating of 10 is meant to serve as a point of reference for the softest mattress available. This can be likened to sleeping on a cloud, while still relieving pressure points on the shoulders and hips. Mattresses with a 10 rating are often considered the best in feel and support for people suffering from arthritis or fibromyalgia.
